After 70 years, fans of the classic film 'The Wizard of Oz' may have finally learned the real reason the Wicked Witch was able to conquer the Lollipop Guild: they were sleeping on the job.
At least, that's one explanation that came out of the recent reunion that Newsweek put together for the five surviving munchkins in honor of the movie's anniversary, as Lollipop Guild coroner Meinhardt Raabe dozed off in the middle of a conversation that fellow munchkin Ruth Robinson Duccini described as "probably the last time we'll be together."
The reunion wasn't a time to mourn, though, but rather to celebrate the legacy of the film and the lives of the actors who provided some of the film's most famous and beloved scenes, which helped change the way the public looked at little people. Reminiscing about the production, the five discussed the generosity of Judy Garland, fears that Scarecrow actor Ray Bolger would injure himself with his stunt work and their discovery that Dorothy's little dog Toto actually got paid more than the munchkins because "he had a better agent."
Of course, it's too bad Meinhardt wasn't awake for all the banter, but that's okay. After providing seven decades of joy to viewers of all ages, we think he's earned his rest.

Wow! How wonderful to start the day by seeing and remembering these little people and the movie that has brought such enjoyment to so many over the years. May God grant peace and pleasure to these actors who did much to enhance ths movie. With all that is happening in our country today, it is so good to slip back into the past when we, as a nation, enjoyed our lives and our pride in the country that produced such fine entertainment.

One intersting piece of trivia about the Wizard of Oz is that they couldn't find enough "little people" to fill Munchkinland. They put out the casting call for a few hundred and only got about 125,(?). Anyway, they had to fill many of the Munchkin parts with children who were small enough to look like "little people".

John : You said it all. It was wonderful to see these Munchkins 90+ This was a wonderful movie, even if it did scare me when I saw it as a child. These little people really earned their salary back then and it was great to see how happy they all were. That may be their secret to their longevity.

Couldn't agree more. I'm now officially a "senior" and still love this movie. The fact that this was all shot on a set still is just amazing.
One of the best ever!

What does that have to do with the Wizard of Oz? I think this was a wonderful clip to see first thing in the morning. I have always loved the movie, and the munchkins made it even more special. Especially when you think about how long ago it was made.

This was a great piece reminding us of one of the truly classic pieces of American cinematics. I am going to have to watch it again, now. And it really did a lot for little actors and actresses. Most notable was a young fellow by the name of Warwick Davis, who has the singular distinction of being in both the old and new versions of Narnia's Prince Caspian. I also enjoyed him in Willow, in which there was an entire town full of little people.

First of all it would have been nice if the people who did this article, went out of their way to print the names of the five people they were doing the article about! Anyway, I met one of them at a signing in Myrtle Beach, SC. He's the gentleman on the far right in the pic above. His last name was Carroll (sp?) I think. He told us wonderful stories about the movie and about Judy Garland. He was such a sweet man, and I'll always appreciate meeting him. I might not have been around when that movie was made, but I'm very happy I got to see it, and it was my pleasure to get to meet someone who actually knew Judy Garland. Bless them all, and thanks for the memories.

The names in the top pic from left to right are, Jerry Maren, Ruth Duccini, Meinhardt Raabe, Margaret Pelligrini and Karl Slover...the one your talking about was probably Mickey Carroll, who passed away earlier this year...hope that helps answer your ? I've met them all many times, and they are great people....I met Mickey once, and he was quite a story teller...I just LOVE OZ, and will never get tired of it!
